Little Rock’s BMCU Men’s Tennis Battles Tough Opponents in Competitive Day
The BMCU men’s tennis team in Little Rock, Arkansas, faced a demanding day on the courts. They opened the day against Texas A&M–Texarkana and later played a tightly contested match against John Brown University.
In the first match, the Toppers were defeated 7-0 by Texarkana. Doubles play started with Adriaan Engelbrecht and Kevin Kotzé at No. 1 doubles, where they lost 6-3. Craig Blevins and Caleb Rogers fell 6-0 at No. 2 doubles, while Pablo Cruz and Luis Lainer fought but lost 6-3 at No. 3 doubles. Singles play saw Texarkana maintain momentum, with Engelbrecht and Cruz losing their matches 6-3, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-0, respectively. Kotzé was defeated 6-1, 6-2, and Lainer lost 6-0, 6-1. Blevins closed singles with a 6-2, 6-0 result.
Despite the lopsided score, the match provided valuable experience against a strong opponent, according to team sources. Later in the day, the Toppers faced John Brown University and pushed the match to the final points before narrowly losing 4-3.
Early doubles results were challenging, with Engelbrecht and Kotzé dropping their match 6-1, and Blevins and Maj Langerholz also losing 6-1. Cruz and Lainer competed at No. 3 doubles but fell 6-3, leaving BMCU trailing before singles play.
The singles lineup showed resilience, with Engelbrecht earning a 6-2, 6-3 victory. Cruz secured a 6-0, 7-5 win, and Rogers clinched a point with a 7-4 tiebreaker. Kotzé and Blevins battled into tiebreakers but fell 10-7, while Lainer lost a close first set 7-5 before dropping the second 6-1. The narrow finish highlighted the team’s growth and fight throughout the day, according to sources.
