Blue Mountain Christian tops Williams Baptist 8-2 before game suspension

Walnut Ridge, Ark. — Blue Mountain Christian’s baseball team earned an 8-2 victory over Williams Baptist on Thursday afternoon. The game was played in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, and was part of a doubleheader that was suspended after eight innings.

The Toppers jumped ahead early, with Cody Presley hitting a two-run homer in the first inning that scored Jake Meilstrup and put Blue Mountain Christian ahead 2-0. Williams Baptist responded in the third, tying the game at two on Lawson Aaron’s two-run single that scored Will Riley and Gavin Mink.

Blue Mountain Christian regained the lead in the fourth inning. Gates Gerhart hit an RBI single, followed shortly by Reise Thomas’ bases-loaded hit that brought home Gerhart. The Toppers extended their lead with an RBI sacrifice fly from Trace Roy in the fifth and a two-run single from Roy in the sixth. An error later allowed Roy to score, increasing the lead to 8-2.

Offensively, Presley finished with two hits and two RBIs, while Roy drove in three runs and contributed on the basepaths. Jarret Morris also contributed with multiple hits and timely contact. On the mound, starter Benji Webb pitched a complete game, allowing two runs on eight hits with three strikeouts. Webb’s performance helped prevent Williams Baptist from mounting a comeback.

The game was suspended in the eighth inning and will resume tomorrow morning. The teams will start at the beginning of the eighth inning, according to the schedule.
