Mobile edges Blue Mountain Christian in walk-off finish
Mobile, Ala. — The Blue Mountain Christian Toppers rallied from an early deficit and briefly took the lead Saturday afternoon, but Mobile scored in the ninth inning to secure a 6-5 victory in the final game of the SSAC series.
Mobile scored first with a run in the third inning and added two more in the fifth to build a 3-0 lead. The Toppers responded in the sixth, when Jake Meilstrup delivered a two-RBI single to score Yaidel Perez and Ethan Hirons, cutting the deficit to one.
Blue Mountain Christian seized momentum in the seventh inning with a three-run frame. Perez hit a two-RBI single to bring home Cody Presley and Ross Polizzi, giving the Toppers a 4-3 lead. Trace Roy followed with an RBI single to extend the lead to 5-3.
Mobile responded with a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to one and tied the game in the eighth. In the ninth, Mobile capitalized on a defensive error to score the winning run and secure the walk-off win.
The Toppers collected 12 hits in the game. Roy led with a 4-for-5 performance, including two doubles and an RBI. Meilstrup went 1-for-5 with two RBIs, while Perez finished 1-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Gavin Foley added two hits, and Polizzi, Presley, Bryant, and Reise Thomas each contributed one hit.
On the mound, Benji Webb pitched 6.2 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on 10 hits with four strikeouts. Relief pitcher Christian Manness allowed one run and struck out one. Morris pitched the final inning and was charged with the loss.
Despite the loss, Blue Mountain Christian showed resilience after falling behind early and putting themselves in position to win late. The team will look to regroup as they continue conference play in upcoming games.
