Falkner seeks winning record in region opener; county runners prepare for qualifiers
Falkner can turn a return to .500 into a winning record Friday when the Eagles travel to Ashland for their football region opener. At 3–3, Falkner enters the Oct. 16 matchup against an 0–7 opponent with a chance to build on last week’s victory at Riverside.
Walnut also begins region play Friday, hosting Hamilton in a meeting of 3–4 teams on senior night. Ripley, 1–6, visits 2–5 Byhalia. All three games kick off at 7 p.m., according to the teams’ MaxPreps schedules.

Championship competition follows football: Falkner’s girls golfers head to the state match in Brookhaven Oct. 19–20 after a division runner-up finish. A tee time is not listed.
Blue Mountain’s next cross-country meet is the regional at the Blue Mountain College trail Oct. 20, with girls at 4 p.m. and boys at 4:35. The Oct. 22 regional in New Albany uses BNA Park and Tallahatchie Trails: Ripley’s girls race at 10 a.m. and boys at 10:30; Falkner, Pine Grove and Walnut follow in the girls’ 11 a.m. and boys’ 11:30 races.
Ripley’s soccer teams host Caledonia Oct. 26, girls at 5 p.m. and boys at 7. Basketball begins on the posted schedules Oct. 31: Walnut’s girls visit Saltillo at 10:30 a.m.; Pine Grove’s boys visit East Union at noon and its girls visit Hatley at 1:15 p.m.
On Nov. 3, Falkner’s girls visit Ripley at 6:30 p.m., while Blue Mountain hosts Thrasher, girls at 6 and boys at 7:30. Walnut’s boys host Tishomingo County Nov. 7 at 1:30 p.m. The next boys games for Ripley and Falkner are Nov. 10 home dates with New Albany at 7 and Myrtle at 7:30, respectively.
The archery calendar starts Pine Grove against visiting Wheeler Jan. 28, 2027, time unlisted; Blue Mountain’s next match is at Pine Grove Feb. 25 at 5 p.m.
In 2027 baseball, Walnut has a Feb. 6 scrimmage at Mooreville, time unlisted; Ripley visits Alcorn Central that day at 2 p.m. Falkner hosts Tremont Feb. 11 at 6, and Pine Grove visits Walnut March 6 at 1.
Softball’s next dates are Pine Grove’s Feb. 6 Mooreville jamboree, time unlisted; Ripley hosting New Albany Feb. 9 at 6:30 p.m.; Falkner hosting New Site Feb. 19 at 5:30; and Walnut hosting New Site March 16 at 5:30.
