Blue Mountain Christian Volleyball splits matches at Vette City Classic

Bowling Green, Ky. — Blue Mountain Christian University’s volleyball team opened play at the Vette City Classic on Friday with a win over Kentucky Christian before falling in five sets to Campbellsville.

The Volley Toppers swept Kentucky Christian 3-0, winning 25-12, 25-16, and 25-10. They dominated offensively, hitting .372 with 40 kills and just eight errors. They also excelled from the service line, recording 13 aces while limiting Kentucky Christian to three.

In the second match, BMCU pushed Campbellsville to five sets, losing 3-2. The teams traded the first three sets, with Campbellsville winning the second and third. BMCU forced a fifth set after a 34-32 win in the fourth, but Campbellsville secured the victory with a 15-12 score in the final frame.

Salice Speed led BMCU with 18 kills and 12 digs. Marissa Gerleman added 14 kills with a .440 hitting percentage and six blocks. Valeria Velez contributed 11 digs and eight aces, while Olivia Domino dished out 29 assists and added six digs. Brenyn Wilbanks and Domino each recorded 19 assists. Olivia Domino also led defensively with 29 digs.

Blue Mountain Christian will continue the tournament Saturday with matches against Tennessee Wesleyan at 9 a.m. and the University of Pikeville at 2 p.m., both in Bowling Green.
