Blue Mountain’s Phillip Laney Wins SSAC Coach of Character Award
Montgomery, Ala. — Phillip Laney, head cross country and track and field coach at Blue Mountain Christian University, was honored Monday evening with the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Coach of Character Award during the conference’s annual awards banquet.
The award recognizes coaches who embody the SSAC’s core values of integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership. Laney has served as the head coach of Blue Mountain’s cross country team for 14 years and founded the university’s track and field program in 2022, expanding athletic opportunities for students.
Throughout his tenure, Laney has made a significant impact on student-athletes both athletically and personally. His focus on developing the whole person has helped shape generations of Blue Mountain students and fostered a culture centered on excellence and character, according to university officials.
Blue Mountain Director of Athletics Curt Fowler praised Laney’s influence. “Phillip Laney is one of the finest Christian coaches I have ever known,” Fowler said. “He cares deeply about his student-athletes and consistently guides them toward growth as competitors, students, and followers of Christ. This award reflects his daily character and commitment.”
Laney expressed humility upon receiving the award. “Coaching has never been about recognition,” he said. “It’s about investing in young people and helping them discover their gifts and purpose. I am grateful for the students and colleagues I’ve had the privilege to work with at Blue Mountain.”
Under Laney’s leadership, the programs have achieved competitive success while emphasizing academic achievement and Christian values. His dedication has left a lasting mark on the Blue Mountain community, officials said.
