Lady Wildcats hand Hickory Flat first loss of season

The Walnut Lady Wildcats came into their match against Hickory Flat on Saturday at the Sikes Memorial tournament having won 5 of their last 6 contests to fight their way back to .500 on the year. They had played in four contests decided by 2 possessions or less.

Make that 6 out of 7 wins, one game over .500 and 5 contests decided by 2 posessions or less.

Walnut handed the Lady Rebels their first loss of the season on Saturday by a score of 55-49.

After falling behind 14-8 after the first quarter, the Lady Cats turned up the defensive intensity and hit several big shots, including this Madi Vuncannon steal and layup to give Walnut the lead before the half.

Vuncannon led Walnut with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Claire Leake added 19 points and 10 boards.

In boys action, the Wildcats came up just short against the Rebels, falling 51-48.

Bailey Quinn led with 16 points. TJ Luellen added 10.

The Cats face off against another top 1A opponent as in county rival Pine Grove comes to town on Tuesday.
