Pine Grove edges Falkner 17–15 in fifth-set thriller; Ripley, Walnut sweep

Pine Grove needed two extra points in the deciding set to settle its county rivalry Thursday, edging Falkner 17–15 in the fifth to finish a 3–2 victory.

The Panthers’ narrow escape highlighted a Sept. 10 volleyball slate that also brought straight-sets wins for Ripley and Walnut. One week after Pine Grove swept Falkner, the Eagles pushed the rematch to five sets before the Panthers prevailed.

Pine Grove improved to 13–9 overall and 5–1 in district play with the win, while Falkner fell to 4–11 and 2–2. The result came two nights after Pine Grove lost a fifth set by the same 17–15 margin at Wheeler. This time, the Panthers finished on the winning side.

Ripley allowed just 22 points across three sets Thursday, turning its return to district volleyball into a decisive response to Tuesday’s loss at Oxford.

The Tigers swept Clarksdale 25–7, 25–11, 25–4 on the road Sept. 10 to reach 10–10 overall and remain unbeaten in their reported district matches at 4–0. Walnut delivered a sweep of its own, beating visiting Hamilton 3–0 to improve to 17–2.

At Clarksdale, the margins told the story. Ripley won the opening set by 18 points, took the second by 14 and finished with its widest advantage of the night, holding the Wildcats to four points in the third. The Tigers outscored Clarksdale 75–22 in the match.

The victory restored Ripley to .500 two days after Oxford handed the Tigers a straight-sets defeat. It also gave Ripley its third win in four matches, following victories over Booneville and Hickory Flat before the Oxford loss. Clarksdale fell to 5–5.

Walnut’s win completed a pair of September sweeps against Hamilton. The Wildcats also won 3–0 on the Lions’ court Sept. 3, then beat Hatley in four sets Tuesday before taking Thursday’s rematch.

That stretch has produced three consecutive wins and a 3–0 district record for Walnut. The Wildcats are now 8–0 in matches listed at home on their MaxPreps schedule, with Thursday’s result extending a season in which they have won 47 sets and lost nine.

Walnut’s next listed tournament matches are Saturday against Olive Branch at 9 a.m., Pine Grove at 11 a.m. and New Albany at 1 p.m. Ripley returns to the road Monday for a 6 p.m. match at Kossuth.
