Blue Mountain Christian Falls to Grand View in NAIA Softball Opener

The Blue Mountain Christian University softball team opened the NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round on Monday in Oklahoma City, losing 2-1 to No. 2 seed Grand View University in a walk-off finish.

Making their first appearance in the NAIA national tournament, the Toppers played competitively against one of the top teams in the bracket. They took an early lead in the third inning when Laklyn Nichols scored on an RBI single by Mikaylah Fuqua. The run gave Blue Mountain Christian a 1-0 advantage and prompted a strong defensive effort throughout much of the game.

Neely Cooper pitched effectively for the Toppers, working 6.1 innings while allowing one earned run on five hits and striking out three. Grand View tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning and secured the win with a walk-off RBI single in the same frame.

The Toppers tallied five hits in the game, with Anna Harrison, Mikaylah Fuqua, Aspen Teague, Neely Barrier and Laklyn Nichols each contributing offensively. Despite the loss, Blue Mountain Christian demonstrated resilience and grit during their first national tournament appearance.

The team will continue its run in the tournament on Tuesday at 1 p.m. against No. 5 seed Williams Baptist University in an elimination game in Oklahoma City.
