Williams Baptist beats Blue Mountain Christian in women’s soccer

Blue Mountain, Miss. — Williams Baptist University scored five goals Saturday afternoon at The Summit, defeating Blue Mountain Christian University 5-0 in women’s soccer.

The Toppers’ defense faced pressure early, but goalkeeper Kiana Gordon and the back line prevented a first-half goal for nearly 40 minutes. Williams Baptist broke through in the 40th minute when Yajaira Alvarado scored her first goal of the match. Gordon made seven saves in the first half to keep the deficit at 1-0 at halftime.

Blue Mountain continued to compete after halftime and kept Williams Baptist off the scoreboard for about 20 minutes. The Eagles extended their lead in the 65th minute when Alvarado scored her second goal off an assist from Chloe Cureton. She completed her hat trick in the 75th minute. Williams Baptist added two late goals, with Lucia Alvarez scoring in the 80th minute and Valentina Marin finishing in the 88th minute off an assist from Megan Sharp.

Gordon made eight additional saves in the second half, finishing with 15 for the game. Offensively, the Toppers took four shots in the second half, led by Nayelli Aguayo with two attempts. Daniela Nieto and Jaelyn Cox each added one shot, with Nieto recording the team’s only shot on goal.

The Toppers will look to build on the opportunities created in the second half as they continue their season.
