Falkner hosted HW Byers in boys and girls action on Tuesday. Both contests were close, one possession games in the fourth quarter before Falkner sealed victory in both.
In the girls side, Falkner trailed the Lady Lions of Byers 31-30 at halftime and a 39-37 game early in the fourth quarter turned into a 55-46 victory behind 16 straight fourth quarter points from junior standout India Prather. Prather finished the night with 28 points, 12 rebounds and 9 steals. Senior Madison Griffin added 12 points and 9 rebounds.
And the excitement of that game was just a taste of the down to the wire game that the boys contest would be.
The Eagles and Lions were in a back and fourth contest from the jump, with the Eagles trailing 15-13 after the first quarter. A flurry of three pointers, including a Chauncey Jackson buzzer beater before the half, gave Falkner a 28-22 halftime lead.
HW Byers came back to tie the game 34-34 headed to the fourth quarter behind a 9-0 run led by freshman Devin Moore.
The Lions and Eagles traded blows throughout the final frame and Falkner found themselves trailing 53-52 with just 30 seconds to play.
That’s when spark plug reserve Jordan Peterson uncorked a deep three pointer that went through the net to give the Eagles a 55-53 lead. A defensive stop and the Eagles were able to dribble the clock out for their 7th victory of the year.
Jackson led with 16 pts, Cam Smith had 12 and Cody Johnson 11.
