Back to back: Pine Grove wins pitchers duel to claim Tippah County title
Pine Grove got big plays when they needed them and starting pitching Kyle Thrasher spun a gem on the mound.
The end result? A second straight Tippah County tournament championship for the Panthers.
Thrasher threw a complete game, scattering 5 hits and striking out 6 on the day. For the second year in a row he came out on top of a pitching showdown against Walnut ace Riley Robinson.
Robinson, for his part, went the distance but the Panthers 4 unearned runs on the day that proved to be the difference.
In the top of the 5th, Jacob Hopkins drew a bases loaded walk and D.J. Smith was then hit by a pitch to break a 1-1 tie. Cason Jones then got caught attempting to steal home.
In the top of the 6th, Thrasher ripped a 2-RBI single into LF then scored himself after a pie of throwing errors.
The win moves the Panthers to 7-1 on the season. Walnut falls to 3-6.
