Tippah County Sports GAMEDAY for Tuesday, Jan. 24
Plenty of basketball is going on tonight involving Tippah County schools, including a Pine Grove/Walnut county clash in high school action and RMS and Walnut hitting the floor at the 5-County Junior High Tournament. South Pontotoc visits the RHS Event Center to take on Ripley in Region 2-4A play. Blue Mountain hits the road for non-region play against Myrtle.
5-County Junior High Tournament at NEMCC
RMS vs. New Albany, 4:30 p.m. It’s the junior version of the “Highway 15 Rivalry,” as the RMS Tigers take on the New Albany Junior High boys to kick off day two of the 5-County Tournament. That game will be played inside Bonner Arnold Coliseum on the campus of Northeast Mississippi Community College. RMS won the Tippah County Tournament title last week for the first time in at least four years. New Albany finished second in Union County.
Walnut Junior High vs. Belmont, 5:30 p.m. The junior Wildcats finished second in last week’s Tippah County Tournament. This evening they can get back on the winning track with a victory over Belmont, the boys’ runner-ups for Tishomingo County. That game will also be played at Northeast.
HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL
South Pontotoc at Walnut. Girls tip at 6 p.m. Boys tip at 7:30.
–It’s a tall task, but the Lady Tigers (5-12, 2-5 in Region 2-4A) could make it two region wins in a row with a victory over the Lady Cougars (17-7, 5-2). Ripley edged Houston on the road last Friday 65-63. A win against South Pontotoc could also help with playoff positioning in the Region 2-4A Tournament in February while giving the Lady Tigers a load of confidence down the stretch of the 2023 season. South Pontotoc won the first meeting of the season 57-51,
–The Tigers 5-12 (2-5) will look to even the series against South Pontotoc 20-4 (4-3), who took the first meeting of the year 36-34. Last week, the Tigers snapped a three-game losing streak with a 37-26 win at Houston.
Blue Mountain at Myrtle. Girls tip at 6 p.m. Boys tip at 7:30 p.m.
–In non-region action, the 16-4 Lady Cougars have locked up the No. 1 seed for the Region 3-1A Tournament. Tonight’s game against the Lady Hawks (5-16) will be about fine-tuning as the postseason looms. Blue Mountain is on a four-game winning streak, while Myrtle is 2-3 in its last five games.
–The Cougars 12-8 (5-2) are also focused on working on improvements for the playoffs, as they’ve virtually locked up the No. 2 seed for the Region 3-1A tournament.
Pine Grove at Walnut. Girls tip at 6 p.m. Boys tip at 7:30 p.m.
–On the girls’ side, tonight’s 1-2A action in Walnut is about the Walnut Lady Wildcats 12-9 (1-2) looking to stay alive for the No. 2 seed heading into the Region Tournament and the Lady Panthers 2-15 (0-3) trying to get their first regional win.
–On the boys’ side, Pine Grove and Walnut are on different ends of the spectrum. The Panthers 17-7 (3-1) need a win to stay in control of winning the region to be the No. 1 seed when the playoffs begin. Walnut is desperate for a victory to 1) snap a six-game losing steak and 2) give them a win inside the region.
