Friday was another race day for the Walnut Wildcat Cross Country team, this time at the Pontotoc Invitational.

Another race day means that the Wildcats came home with hardware. The Lady Cats took home 3rd in the 1-3A race with Harley Garner taking a fifth place finish and MK Vuncannon taking 7th. The boys took home 1st in the 1-3A meet.

A big reason why the boys took home the team 1st? Gabe McElwain continued his impressive early season streak as he took home the individual first. Nothing new for the junior runner: it is his 5th straight top finish this season.

McElwain clocked in at a 17:00:23 to take the top spot, nearly a full minute ahead of the second place finisher. It was his largest margin of victory on the year.

Walnut claimed a boys cross country title in 2019 and then dealt with injuries last season. With a roster that includes talented experienced runners in Trenton and Kaden Braddock, Owen Hopper and a host of others that have the potential to round out the top finishers, the ‘Cats are looking to reclaim the top spot in 2A.
