Friday Football: Tippah Teams tackle tough tests
All three county teams are back in football action this week after Ripley’s bye week and Falkner/Walnuts Homecoming last week. All three schools have matchups against quality opponents that bring a combined 12-2 record into the games
Ripley is at home this weekend against a quality opponent in the Pontotoc Warriors. The Warriors enter the contest at 4-1 and as one of the top 4A schools in the state. Ripley (2-2) will try and get their run game going behind Jamal Brooks with Tristan Vandiver attempting to hit big plays to Jey Johnson and Trey Blanchard. The defense will try and contain the middle of the field and limit the Warriors explosive plays.
Falkner has a key division matchup against last years division winner Okolona. Okolona enters the contest at 4-1 and 2-0 in division play while Falkner is 3-2 and 2-0 in division. Both teams have the capability to score quickly, with Okolona relying heavily on their running game which averages over 250 yards per game. The Eagles are led by an explosive offense attack with Lane Elliott, TJ Colom, Chauncey Jackson and Elijah Moore among the state offensive leaders. This game will come down to which team gets the most from their defense. Look for a high scoring contest.
Walnut is at home this week with a contest against Fayette Academy. The Vikings from Fayette County (TN) enter with a record of 4-0. The Wildcats will put their 4-1 record on the line and try to pick the victory by getting their three headed rushing attack of Kevin Hurley, TJ Luellen and Khris Perry going. The trio is averaging nearly 300 yards per contest.
